A bad situation could have been made worst, had I not used the time in there for my betterment and to work on being me. Life behind the walls of a prison is like another world, they have their codes, their language, and their ways of doing things. One of the most common thing that goes on in prison, is men having sexual relationships with other men.
Now, even though I never participated in this abnormal and evil behavior, there are a small number of black men that do. I have seen men 6ft, lbs, and all muscles, lift every weight on the weight pile during the day, and have another man busting out his booty hole at night. I worked in the kitchen and part of my duty was walking trays down to the prison infirmary to feed the inmates in there. They have a special ward where I was held, just for men with full blown aids.

Person standing behind bars The first time someone in my family was incarcerated, I was in grade school. Some people were incarcerated for being undocumented in the US. By the age of ten, I was ashamed to have family members in prison and refused to tell anyone. Because I was so fearful of the stigma that comes with incarceration, I refused to open up to anyone.
This debilitating fear of stigmatization created a cycle of silence and prevented me from accessing support from my own community. How do I support my community who has been incarcerated?

Characteristics of Successful Ex-Felons: People get ill everyday but they somehow recover and are able to seek opportunity and they are made whole. Ex-felons on the other hand suffer for a lifetime for decisions that they made in the spur of the moment. Some people understand the dynamics associated with persons who struggle daily to regain their respect and dignity in their communities because they were previously convicted of a felony.
Then there are those who believe that once a person has been convicted of a felony they should be treated as felons and denied opportunities for the rest of their lives. We have programs in every state that offers assistance to ex-felons being released from prison, yet, every time ex-felons complete applications for employment, they are constantly reminded that some things never change. I encourage you to read my past blogs, email me and ask questions about prison issues. I promise nothing in answers, but I can at least try to address it.
That leads me to an issue one of my readers was mentioning that I think is worth talking about. Lots and lots of people have loved ones in prison, whether husbands, boyfriends and pen pals. Answer…yes… and no…and yes. You see, that answer is clearly not something I can officially answer for any one person, and remember, I cannot speak for any inmate, but what we can do is talk about this.
